  2. produce grazing and hay or silage for a
  3. period of one to ten years before being
  4. ploughed and cropped. Short-term leys are
  5. often incorporated in systems of crop
  6. rotation. A simple seven-year rotation, for
  7. example, might include a three-year ley
  8. followed by two years of wheat and then two
  9. years of barley, before returning the land to
  10. temporary grass once more. In this way, the
  11. cereal crops can take advantage of the
  12. build-up of soil fertility that occurs during
  13. the period under grass.
